KNCV brings IUPAC 2023 to The Hague

Last Thursday, 13 July 2017, IUPAC delegates voted the 49th World Chemistry Congress to be hosted in The Hague, the Netherlands. The event will take place at the city’s largest convention venue, the World Forum on 20-25 August 2023 and will be organised by the Professional Congress Organiser (PCO) - Congress by design.

“We are excited to bring together the international chemical community. The year 2023 is very special for us as it marks the 120th anniversary of our society, the KNCV. We have a vibrant chemistry community in the Netherlands which is committed to turning this congress into a great success. This meeting will serve as a podium to enhance the visibility of chemistr​y and chemists. Our ambition is to inspire a new generation of young chemists,” states Prof. Floris Rutjes, president of the KNCV.

This will be the first time the IUPAC congress will be held in the Netherlands, with around 2500 delegates expected to attend the event.

“Winning this bid demonstrates The Hague’s international reputation as a first-rate congress destination. We are excited to welcome event delegates to our city. The city appreciates the expertise and innovation that they will bring here,” says Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein, The Hague's alderman for Economic Affairs, Harbours, Welfare and Health.

 “This is a big win for us,” says Nienke van der Malen, director of The Hague Convention Bureau. “The city and its partners will provide an outstanding event infrastructure to guarantee the success of IUPAC 2023.”

According to 2016 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, Prof. Ben Feringa from the University of Groningen: “Chemistry in the Netherlands has seen tremendous developments with exciting discoveries in academia and industry. At the IUPAC Congress 2023 we will show the new frontiers of the chemical sciences.” 

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is the world-leading authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, standardized methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically-evaluated data.
